We had a wonderful time on Earth Day at Shands Health Care at the University of Florida. There was tremendous energy and excitement from the employees, visitors, and patients. This year has seen an explosion in the interest of all things Earth-friendly and you could see it in the faces of the visitors. The focus has intensified to a whole new level and that's good news for Mother Earth.
How to Make Organic Compost with Red Worms in Worm Bin
|Bill Explaining Vermi-composting to Earth Day Visitor|
Everyone was fascinated with the working worm bin we brought, filled with Red Worms in a bedding of peat moss and shredded paper. The gardeners saw the potential for making their own organic fertilizer and compost for their vegetable and flower gardens; the fishermen (and women) learned how easy it can be to grow your own fishing worms, while recycling their kitchen and yard waste.
On exhibit in our booth was:
- Worm Compost Bin with Red Worms
- "Bucket of Worms" - Temporary Housing for Red Worms and European Nightcrawlers
- "Pure Black Castings" - Organic Fertilizer (99.9% Pure Worm Castings)
- "VermaPlex" - Liquid Microbial Soil Inoculant (Made From Pure Black Castings)
- Earthworm Egg Capsules
How About The Red Worms? To anyone who might be concerned about the Red Worms: For all their ordeal of poking, digging, and spying, the worms were only slightly traumatized. After an evening entrée' of left-over sweet potatoes and a fine green, slimy lettuce puree under freshly shredded paper, they bedded down for the night without incident.
Thank You Very Much!
"Thanks" to all the staff at Shands. Angela Shore and Joanne Kneal, you guys did a tremendous job making us feel welcomed and running the show smoothly. Well done.
And to Dr. Manette Monroe: Appreciate your spreading the word to the Pathology department and sending down all those visitors - even the ones 'a-scared-a' worms.
A special "Thanks" to all you folks who took the time to visit the Earth Day at Shands and for stopping by our exhibit. We met and chatted with a lot of very nice people. Hope to see you again soon.
